USB Keyboard Not Working: Problems and Solutions

CursorCreative Commons License

My PS2 keyboard was giving some problem (it was anyway more than 10 years old !). So, I thought that I should get a new keyboard. The computer shop showed me, the PS2 one (Rs. 150) and another one was USB keyboard (of HP, priced at Rs. 450). Actually, this HP USB Keyboard pack came along with a mouse, and the whole Pack was priced at Rs. 750. But the shopkeeper gave the USB Keyboard separately for Rs. 450 and did not force the Mouse on us!

I decided to buy the USB keyboard, as I think that the USB system is the best way to keep ones computer peripherals.

However, on plugging in the USB keyboard, I encountered different sorts of problem.

1) Firstly, the computer would stop at boot up, with the error message, that Keyboard not found.

The solution to this, I found was, that I had plugged the keyboard to the additional USB slot. So, I now plugged in the Keyboard to the USB slot that comes attached with the motherboard. So, the computer would boot up.

2) The next problem was, that when the computer was fully loaded and into Windows XP (SP3) desktop, I found that the keys of the keyboard were not working.

I remembered I had read somewhere that to install the keyboard, I had to press the “winkey”. So, the moment I pressed the winkey, computer flashed the message in the system tray (systray) – “New hardware detected”, and after sometime, the installation happened successfully. So now the USB keyboard was working fine.

3) But when I re-booted the computer, I found that there was another problem. This time, the USB keyboard was not being detected by the system at startup ie. I could not press the F8 or the delete key or enter the Setup (like BIOS etc) at the startup. It was only after that the windows was loaded that the USB Keyboard was working.

So, now, I again attached the old PS2 keyboard, and entered the Setup. I found that there is an option under “Integrated Peripherals” –> “Chipset” for the USB Keyboard, and mine was set at “USB Keyboard Disabled”. So I changed that and the final setting read “USB Keyboard Enabled”.

Now, the USB Keyboard is working fine – just like the old PS2 one, except that this one is new. And, a new keyboard by itself is a charm to work with.

I only hope, that it does not pop up any other problem!
