Annual Sports Day 2009

Isha’s school – the Kangaroo Kids (Jabalpur) had organised the annual sports day today at JCB Ground (Manas Bhawan). We went there at 8.30 AM. The Chief Guests were late by nearly half an hour and kept all the children and parents waiting for the function to start.

(Its difficult to understand that why in India – the person’s of honour who are made Chief Guests are so lacking in their concern for the time of others – in this case wife of Court Chief Justice and wife of another Judge!)

On the good part of the school management – after waiting – so long – that seemed to put the children to lethargy the function started without waiting for the Chief Guest – and the Sports day inauguration torch was lighted.

The Chief Guest(s) came shortly afterwards – and there was unfurling of the School Flag.

The Commentary team seemed very efficient and kept announcing the various things – about the school – and about the various events one by one in a very nice manner.

In contrast the sound party – which was some outsourced band party seemed out of sync while playing the various music.

The Kangaroo Kids at Jabalpur started in July 2008 with 20 students, and currently it has 70 students on its rolls. A good thing about the Jabalpur franchisees are that they have kept up the standard for such school – as all the curricula and events get dictated from the Bombay head office.

Today, in the sports annual day, it was the tiny trots who stole the show with their various kinds of races – and also the skating show and yoga show.

There was also the Ribbon dance and the pom-pom dance

As the commentators spoke – the school prefers to impart practical oriented teaching rather than theoretical teaching – so we had various kinds of races – based around the theme of ‘community helpers’ – postman race, farmer race, waiter race, gardener race, vendor race, cobbler race, barber race, ice cream vendor race, nurse race, mechanic race, milkman race, dhobi race, driver race, and sweeper race.

I would say – the good thing about this was – that the students would value the work of such trades – rather than looking down on such people.

(Recently viewing one of the TV Show Big Boss – one of the participants – commented – मै मल्टी मिलीयनेयर आदमी यहाँ आकर झाडू लगा रहा हूँ! – the guy was appropriately kicked out from the show later on). Hopefully the Kangaroo Kids children will not look down to such work.

Needless to say – the parents went hyper – with all the photo ops for their kids participating in these various activities.

At the end there was also surprise in store for the parents – who were picked by chits – to participate in the parents race. One was measure your step – in which we also participated; the other was Bakers race – in which the parents had to make sandwich eat it and run.

In the end there was the prize distribution, Chief Guest’s speech, and national anthem.

I would say that the teachers and staff did a really great job in preparing and training the small children for the event.

Overall it was quite funfilled – and a very good effort on part of school authorities in very well managing such event of small children.
